FAM Trip Haarlem

You will be asked to find a venue for your event. Searching and booking can be a time-consuming job. These days there are so many venues. I can help you with this and have done pre-work. This time I bring Haarlem to the attention.

The other day I was invited by Haarlem Marketing to their FAM Trip. FAM means “familiarization trip”. This event is organized specifically for Event Managers, PCO’s (Professional Conference Organizers), DMC’s (Destination Marketing Companies) and travel agents. A great way to meet existing and new locations in a rapid overview.
In this blog I will take you with this FAM Trip and share great venues for your event.

Krachstroom and the Lichtfabriek

The morning started in Krachtstroom. This pop-up drink and food spot was opened in April 2019 on the ground floor in the Ketelhuis of the Lichtfabriek. Guests can enjoy a breakfast, lunch and drinks of up to 250 people. Upon arrival, a table full of savory breakfast snacks and drinks was ready. After that we got a tour of all the rooms of the Lichtfabriek. This venue is a national monument from 1902. Some still know this venue of the dance parties, which were held until 2018.

Nowadays, this venue is very wide for several events. Did you know that the the battles of the The Voice also take place here? I was gladly surprised at the number of small meeting rooms and break-out rooms. Ideal in combination with the larger rooms which can serve as a plentary for a congress. You can go here for a.o. presentations, company parties and meetings and so much more. There is capacity in any form, which makes it very intersting for larger and smaller companies. Which is also nice, that there are 250 free parking spaces are around this authentic industrial. With public transport? That’s also no problem, because there is near train station Haarlem-Spaarnwoude. Ideal starting point to get to know the city better… and we do that as well as by boat!

Address: Minckelersweg 2, (De Waarderpolder)

Restaurant Frisk

At the back of the Lichtfabriek is the Spaarne, where the canal boat of Smidtje Canal Cruises is ready. Curious when I am, I look around and what do I see? The old Droste Cacao chocolatefactory from 1890! Also such a beautiful industrial national monument with a story. Since 2017, the Frisk restaurant lies at the Spaarne, which is based on Scandinavian cuisine. You can go here all day. The conservatory overlooking the water is suitable for private dining of max. 45 people.

Smidtje Canal Cruises

Enjoying my fruit cocktail on board, Anne-Marije Hogenboom, Director of Haarlem Marketing, tells about the program. Smidtje Canal Cruises explains the sailing possibilities. They rent ships for groups and sloops for small companies. What’s also fun: the hop-on-hop-off canal boat, you can get off at all the sights at any time. If you want an event on the water, you can! The capacity of the event ship is max. 85 people. The boat trip takes us to the center of Haarlem.

Teylers Museum

The first stop is the oldest museum in the Netherlands: the Teylers Museum from 1784. Beautiful national monument inside and outside, because many historical elements are still visibly authentic. We get a short tour and even visited, through the Gehoorzaal, the library that is not accessible to the public (only with extra booking for a group tour). How fun is that! I love discovering unknown locations and sharing it with you. The Gehoorzaal has a capacity of up to 150 people and is therefore the largest space. The Garden Hall (museum café) can accommodate 150 people reception and dinner 60 people. After that there are also several rooms, where you can meet. Private dining is also possible here.

Address: Spaarne 16

Hofje van Bakenes

Our tour continues with a city guide, which guides us through the old town. From the back of the Teylers Museum we walk into the oldest existing courtyard: “Hofje van Bakenes” (1395) of the Netherlands. Beautiful courtyard garden with plenty of flowering plants and an old-fashioned water pump and a pond. If you go after it to the Philharmonie Haarlem, you are in the Red light district of Haarlem. Never knew…

Philharmonie Haarlem

Concertgebouw Philharmonie Haarlem is in a historic building with industrial elements and is part of the Stadsschouwburg and has a capacity of up to 3,500 people. Ideal for a bigger event like a congress, fair, theatre show or party. It features a larger theatre, foyer and ten sub-rooms. There are also two smaller meeting rooms from five people. De Toneelschuur, which is next to it, can also be involved in your event, making this venue the largest of Haarlem.

Address: Lange Begijnestraat 11

Winery Okhuysen

With the city guide we continue to walk through the center and along the way we hear all kinds of fun facts about Haarlem and the history. We arrive at Winery Okhuysen, which has existed since 1867. Here you can find a huge choice of wine for any taste and for any budget. Which is very nice that they also have two 2 spaces downstairs in the basement for a drink or wine tasting. Private dining is possible from ten people. For the catering they work with restaurant Brick, which is around the corner.

Address: Gierstraat 34

Jopenkerk Haarlem

Wine on beer gives pleasure! The last destination we visit in Haarlem is the Jopenkerk. In 1995 the Jacobskerk was bought and transformed into Jopenkerk. Today is red, yet the color that dominates in here. If you walk in,
you see directly the big boilers above the bar. Jopen creates original craft beers. Next to city brewery, this is a grand café and restaurant and you can sit both downstairs and above. When I walked up, I was surprised about the décor. Not only on the ground, but also on the walls is old-fashioned Oriental carpet. A behind-the-scenes tour and tasting is held at the other location: the Jopen Proeflokaal in the Waarderpolder.

There are several ways to arrange transport for an event. How fun is it next to a whole day historical venues, also to be transported in an old city bus! That fits perfectly into the concept. I was gladly surprised when this old grey city bus “Leyland-Verheul” from 1965 to drive us to our final destination.

Landgoed Duin & Kruidberg

With the oldtimer we drive through the long driveway into the Estate Duin & Kruidberg of 9 hectares. Near upon entry on the left you will find the coach house Nova Zembla. Suitable for smaller events such as dinners, meetings, but due to the various industrial spaces this can also serve as a break-out in combination with the country house.

At the end of the driveway is the 4-star hotel. This location was once the largest residential house in the Netherlands, which was built by Mr. Cremer in the early 20th century. Nowadays, this is a classic-style 4-star hotel, venue and recently also a Spa & Wellness ‘t Princenbosch. You can also eat well at the Vrienden van Jacob (Michelin star restaurant) and brasserie & lounge bar DenK. On the ground floor of the country house you will find style rooms for meetings and dining.

In the other event section you will find several modernly decorated meeting rooms, which are suitable from 10 to 300 people, because they can be switched. Ideal venue for a multi-day heather session or management meeting. You can also visit the estate and close by National Park Zuid-Kennemerland for sporting team buildings activities. After a delicious lunch, the oldtimer city bus was ready to take us to the starting location again.

Address: Duin- en Kruidbergerweg 60, Santpoort-Noord
